Early Access: What It Takes to Double Your Video Revenue
Selling early access to public videos can have a big impact the revenue each video makes.
This blog post sketches out the tipping point at which it can double the overall revenue per video.
A typical YouTube channel makes $5 RPM through advertisting revence.
To double the overall revenue per video, early access would need to add an additional $5 of revenue per video.
With a $6 price for early access, the content creator gets roughly $5 of revenue per early access viewers after fees, so $5 RPM requires only a single purchase in every thousand viewers.
Note these numbers can vary a little bit by channel topic.
Some channel categories have much higher advertisting RPMs that can raise the tipping point for early access revenue to overtake PPV revenue. The presence of third party channel sponsors can raise this threshold even further.
However, the beauty of the early access model is that content owners can double dip on revenue sources.
A channel can sell early access whilst also retaining almost all the revenue from platform advertising revenue & third party sponsors.
